SOST-CO2: NEW INDUSTRIAL AND SUSTAINABLE USES OF CO2
 Image
Programme: CENIT - Programa Ingenio 2010
Duration: 01-01-08 / 31-12-11
Summary: The main objective of the project is to develop CO2 utilization technologies, complementing capture technologies, as an alternative to the geological storage only. The combination of CO2 capture-transformation-utilization and large scale utilization will be prioritized. The implementation of this technology will involve research, development and validation of new concepts and will integrate solutions to enhance the CO2 life cycle. This project offers an obvious environmental approach, since it will not only reduce CO2 emissions and its usage in different industrial applications but also develop technologies for sustainable energy production (e.g. biofuels and hydrogen).

The project will consider the entire CO2 life cycle, from its capture to its medium/large scale utilization, taking into account transport and storage. The project is two pronged. On one hand, this proposal connects CO2 apture with its utilization, offering a real and sustainable alternative to geological storage. On the other hand, the project offers a continuation of the work done in CENIT-CO2 project, exclusively focused on capture. The project consists of three major topics: capture-logistics (CAP and LOG), transformation (TRANS) and utilization in several applications (AP).

VISION: To become a Centre of Excellence in exploitation of sustainable energy sources, reducing CO2 and other greenhouse gases emissions, developing novel technologies for a CO2 sustainable use instead of geological storage only.

MISSION: (a) To promote the research and development of new technologies for CO2 capture and utilization, preventing its emission to the atmosphere and providing an added value. (b) To combine capture with utilization technologies in order to gain a leading position in Spain and increase our International presence.
