Industrial Scaling Laboratory print email
Wednesday, 19 September 2007 10:05

A laboratory devoted to the scaling of the research and applications developed at Matgas. It covers 150 m2 and is divided into 50m2 assembly areas and a 100 m2 pilot plants zone, with the latter of particular interest due to its height of over 9 metres. This height allows for the development of semi-industrial extraction, distillation and fractioning columns. Two walkways at different heights provide a safe working environment and simple accommodation for equipment and analysers.

Applications scaling is one of the bases for the technology transfer from a research centre to the industry. On an initial level, research is conducted using small amounts of reactants and under highly controlled conditions. Behaviour at this scale does not need to be reproducible at industrial level and involves huge financial risk and a great risk of failure if its results are extrapolated directly.

Scaling enables this risk to be reduced, so reproducing the experiments by increasingly bigger amounts and under increasingly industrial conditions. Recording the changes that occur and the problems that appear in each scaling change.
