The MATGAS Simulation Laboratory has been created to offer a permanent calculation infrastructure to provide support to the MATGAS projects that require it. At MATGAS, a series of projects based on the simulation of properties and processes in materials has been carried out, such as the storing of hydrogen in carbon nanostructures (nanotubes and nanofibres), the depositing of copper layers as electrical contacts in microelectronics, or the solubility of nanoparticle dispersions. These projects require extensive calculation capacity which in general is not adequately covered by the calculation equipment belonging to the groups who carry out the research. The MATGAS Simulation Laboratory provides high-performance calculation equipment to enable these projects to be carried out.

The laboratory has parallel Dell calculation equipment which comprises thirty-four Dell PowerEdge 750 nodes with a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 – Prescott processor and 1 Gb ECC-DDR memory and a Dell PowerEdge 1750 node controller with two 3.06 GHz Xeon processors and 2 Gb ECC-DDR memory. Communication between nodes is by means of two Ethernet Gigabit switches. The system includes two 5000 VA UPS units, a backup tape unit, 42U cabinet in Rack and a KVM digital switch for remote handling of the nodes.
