MatGas, a center of excellence on CO₂ born as a joint venture among Carburos Metálicos- Air Products Group, the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas-CSIC) and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona-UAB) has initiated a Seminar Series on CO₂ and related issues.

MatGas aims at contributing at different levels in the research and development of technologies for CO2 capture and utilization, working in the improvement of green technologies, friendly with the environment. The objective of this series of seminars is to acquire and divulgate a solid knowledge of the state of the art in the field of CO2 capture, utilization and energy issues associated to environmentally benign energy technology.

Several international experts on CO₂ capture, sequestration, utilization and energy related issues (including hydrogen) have been and will be invited to participate at this series. Their expertise gives a broad perspective to the subject: from fundamental knowledge to well developed technologies. The complementary approach will enlighten the issues and challenges on this relevant topic.

The seminar series was inaugurated on December 2007. A list of invited speakers who already participated includes:

Short Bio

• the operation and control of large combustion plants for better performance and NO_x /CO₂  emissions reduction
• the development and improvement of control techniques for particulate emissions

Most of the R&D work is performed under contract for an important number of European utilities and/or the European Commission. In most cases the research is conducted either at pilot scale units or at industrial plants. In the last 14 years Prof. Cortés has directed or participated as senior researcher in more than 22 projects with a total accumulated financial aid of circa 18 MM€.

He is author of more than 30 papers and holds several patents on advanced in-furnace monitoring systems.
Prof Cortés holds a MSc in Industrial (Chemical) Engineering from the School of Engineering, University of Seville (1974) and a  PhD from the same School (1978).
